Rockford, IL. - The Rockford IceHogs and General Manager Mark Bernard announced Wednesday that the team has signed defenseman Ashton Cumby to a two-year AHL contract.

Cumby skated in Rockford's two preseason contests last October before joining Seattle in the WHL for a third season with the Thunderbirds. In 2025-26, the Bonnyville, AB native played 59 games and recorded 17 points (4G,13A) in the regular season.

"We are thrilled with the addition of Ashton for the next two seasons following his junior career", said Bernard. "He’s a big strong defensemen who moves the puck well and we look forward to him expanding on those skills at the professional level. He’s a young man of high character who has a great work ethic that our fans will love."

The 20-year-old defenseman has played parts of five-straight seasons in the Western Hockey League between Winnipeg, Wenatchee and Seattle. His WHL experience eclipses 250 games dating back to 2022.

Cumby was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 6th round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
